Tartuffe

Moliere's classic French comedy comes to life in a sparkling and frothy English verse translation by Richard Wilbur.   Orgon has taken into his home the righteous, pious, and virtuous Tartuffe.  When the rest of the family doubts Tartuffe's virtue, traps are set, masks are dropped, and the truth is exposed.  This comic knot is so tightly tied that it takes near divine intervention to put things right.   After its first performance in 1664, the Archbishop of Paris threatened excommunication for anyone who watched, performed in, or even read the play!
