The Lehigh University Department of Theatre proudly announces that Dede Ayite '07 has made history as the first Black woman to receive the Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Play. Ayite's groundbreaking work on Jaja's African Hair Braiding has garnered acclaim for its vivid celebration of West African culture and artistry.
Ayite, known for her unique journey from neuroscience student to acclaimed Broadway designer, collaborated with faculty during her time at Lehigh, where she cultivated her artistic talent. Her innovative designs for Jaja's African Hair Braiding brought to life the narrative of immigrant hair braiders in Harlem, captivating audiences with their creativity and cultural significance.
"This achievement speaks volumes about Dede's exceptional talent and the nurturing environment she discovered at Lehigh, where her passion for theatre first blossomed," said Kashi Johnson, professor and chair. "We take immense pride in her accomplishments and find inspiration in her dedication to promoting diverse representation in the arts."
