Directing

Directing develops students as visionaries and leaders. The track begins with courses like Dramatic Action, where students study how plot, character, and design combine into a unified work. From there, they move into directing courses introducing rehearsal methods, scene work, and collaboration with actors and designers; gaining the tools to shape productions from first idea to final performance.

Unlike many B.A. programs, Lehigh offers a clear directing path. Students stage one-acts and original projects in the Fowler Black Box Theatre and, in some cases, direct on the mainstage in the Diamond Theater. These experiences give students the rare chance to put theory into practice early and often, in front of real audiences.

What makes directing at Lehigh distinctive is its scope and support. Faculty strengths in performance, directing, and design create a collaborative laboratory where students learn to unify artistic elements into storytelling that is both coherent and daring. Graduates leave with portfolios of realized work and the confidence to pursue M.F.A. programs, directing fellowships, and leadership roles in the field.
